CSM routs Feather River 15-0 in Super Regionals opener
SAN MATEO – The new College of San Mateo softball season home run record is now 80 – up from 70 – up from the old season record of 66.
CSM only needed state player of the year Nia Mapa's first inning 2-run blast, her NorCal leading 16th, for Friday's 3C2A Super Regional playoff win over visiting Feather River College. But the onslaught continued for a 15-0 run-rule "mercy" win over the Golden Eagles (28-14). In the second inning Ale Phillips added a 3-run blast and Alyssa Green also hit the ball over the fence to make it 6-0.
The Bulldogs batted around in the fourth, scoring nine runs as head coach Nicole Quigley-Borg practically cleared the bench, getting 17 players into action.
CSM (40-1) became the only Northern California team to reach the 40-win plateau this season and is now unbeaten in post-season play through 2025 and 2026. The Bulldogs take an 11-game playoff streak into Saturday's second game of the best-of-three series with Golden Valley Conference champion Feather River at 12 noon. An extra game will follow, if needed, on the final day of CSM home athletics this season.
San Mateo has now smacked nine home runs in seven days, adding the three on Friday to the six against Lassen College in last Saturday's first round regional victory. The former CSM homer record was 66, which was surpassed last month – when the Bulldogs reached the 70-homer mark for the first time.
There's room for more ahead. Saturday regional champion advances to next week's 3C2A state championships at Bakersfield College, Thursday through Sunday. CSM easily leads the state in both home runs and team slugging (.709). San Mateo is the two-time defending state champion and has reached every state finals tournament since 2013.
Lola Sierra pitched four shutout innings Friday, allowing just two hits and striking out three to improve her all-state hurling record to 25-1.
Lilyana Willliams put "2's" across the board in runs scored and RBI's while going 2-for-2 at the plate. Eight other players had single hits.
