No. 1 CSM opens Coast schedule with rout at Chabot
HAYWARD — Ale Phillips went 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored three times, and No. 1 state-ranked College of San Mateo pounded out 20 hits in a 27-3 run-rule victory at Chabot College in five innings to open Coast Conference play on Thursday.
The Bulldogs sent 16 batters to the plate in a second inning that produced 11 runs, blowing the game open after leading 5-2 through one. Nine CSM batters collected doubles on the afternoon.
Peyton Huber, Katie Johnson and Maliah Castro each drove in three runs. Huber had a two-run single in the first and added another RBI knock in the second. Castro delivered a two-run double in the fourth, and Johnson drove in three with a pair of ground-outs and a double.
Lilyana Williams went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and scored twice. Alexa Elzey and Río Castillo each had two hits and drove in two runs.
Chabot committed 10 errors as San Mateo scored 15 of its 27 runs without benefit of a hit.
Gianna Tassio struck out four over two scoreless innings in relief for the Bulldogs. Kierstin Wick followed with two more shutout innings to close it out.
The Bulldogs have now won 37 games dating back to last season's state championship run. CSM improved to 21-0 overall and is now 1-0 in conference action. CSM will next face its biggest challenge of the season, taking on No. 2 and unbeaten West Valley College on Tuesday (March 10) at 3 p.m.
