6 Home runs power CSM past Lassen; host Super Regional vs. Feather River
SAN MATEO—With a 6-home run onslaught, College of San Mateo eliminated Lassen College, 9-6, and sweep a best-of-three state softball opening regional series the past weekend. The Bulldogs won the first game, 12-1, in a 5-inning "mercy" run-rule contest.
Defending state champion and top seed CSM (39-1), which has now won ten straight post-season games, will host Feather River College (28-13) in a super regional series on Friday, May 8 (2 p.m.) and Saturday (12 noon) – with a third game to follow, if necessary.
Winner advances to the 3C2A state championships at Bakersfield College, May 14-17. San Mateo is unbeaten in post-season play since the 2024 state tournament.
Alyssa Green began the CSM homer barrage against Lassen (25-16) in the first inning. Katie Johnson (her 14th), Love Cabanas (No. 8), Peyton Huber (No. 4). Nia Mapa (No. 15), and Hannah Ames (No. 11) continued the round trip blitz. And it was needed. The visiting Cougars would not go quietly, erupting for six runs in the fifth inning to take a (brief) 6-5 lead. Huber's home run quickly tied it at 6 in the sixth. Mapa and Ames put it away in the seventh.
Lilyana Williams had three hits, including a double, and stole two bases.
CSM extended its state team home run lead to 77 and paces all with a .705 slugging average.
In the first playoff game with Lassen, Selena Gonzales and Ale Phillips each had "perfect" 3-for-3 hitting performances.
--No. 8 seed Feather River won the Golden Valley Conference title this season, finishing two games ahead of Lassen. San Mateo took a pair of non-league games with Feather River, 5-1 and 11-3, in February. This is the 19th straight year CSM has advanced to post-season play under coach Nicole Quigley-Borg.
San Mateo is 82-4 overall for 2025 and 2026.
